Aim To provide a framework of activities through which personal, social and independence skills can be developed and accredited for those with severe (SLD) and profound multiple learning difficulties (PMLD) Structure - Towards Independence offers formal recognition for small steps in achievement towards a larger goal, as modules can be used separately and accumulated to build up a record of personal achievements.
- The initial module, Starting Out, is mandatory and provides the opportunity for the candidates to be helped to recognise achievements and identify learning challenges for the future, so that relevant modules can be identified.
ASDAN's Certificates in Career Planning Levels 1, 2 and 3 are approved by the regulatory authorities (QCA, ACCAC and CCEA), and listed in Section 96 and 97 of the Learning and Skills Act for Candidates Pre and Post 16. The Certificate of Career Planning qualifications at Levels 1, 2 and 3 have had their approval period renewed and extended to August 2010, with certificates awarded until August 2012. Career Planning has been developed in line with national guidance on Careers Education such as 'QCA's Learning Outcomes for Careers Education and Guidance', 'Skills for Choice' and 'Preparation for Working Life'. It builds on the requirements of the 1987 Education Act and is compatible with standards developed by careers organisations for the assessment of careers programmes. The Career Planning Qualification: - provides a framework for the development and assessment of student learning in careers education and preparation for working life
- prepares students for the challenge of flexible career paths
- provides clear evidence of delivery of Careers Education and Guidance
- is deliverable either through PSHE or Tutorial programmes
- is deliverable alongside other academic and vocational qualifications in a wide range of educational contexts
- contributes to the requirements of main and wider key skills
- provides opportunities for developing individual key skills units
- is appropriate for pre-16, post-16 and adult candidates.

Structure The qualification consists of three units: - Self Development - increasing self development through self awareness, action planning and work related activities
- Career Exploration - stimulating career exploration and critical use of information
- Career Management - enhancing career management, negotiation and presentation skills
QA Method Each candidate must demonstrate their competence in each unit by presenting a portfolio of evidence which clearly shows their ability to meet the standards. Individual certification for completed units is available. For the full qualification all three units must be completed at one level. Part A Questions Externally set questions are used to assess underpinning knowledge and understanding in discussions between the tutor/supervisor/assessor and the candidate. Responses are recorded on the paperwork provided. Part A question responses form part of the portfolio of evidence. The portfolio is internally assessed and externally moderated. What is the Certificate in Life Skills?
The qualification embraces the development of Personal, Social, Health, Moral, Citizenship and ICT skills and also encompass the development of independent skills and skills which prepare the candidate for life. Progression is recognised throughout the three levels of the qualification, in requiring the candidate to demonstrate their ability to maintain skills learnt as well as recognising lateral and incremental achievements.

To gain the Life Skills Qualification, candidates need to complete 4 out of 6 units.
The aims of the qualification are to enable candidates: o to develop and demonstrate a range of personal, key and employability skills leading to personal effectiveness o to broaden experience and manage learning through the enrichment activities provided by the ASDAN challenges o to receive formal recognition and accreditation for the above. To be eligible for the Certificate of Personal Effectiveness, candidates must complete the required challenges, through which evidence of skill development in six areas is demonstrated to the appropriate level. This involves three main strands: o taking responsibility for planning, organising and carrying out a number of activities or challenges, and evidencing this work in a portfolio o developing and evidencing the three Wider Key Skills of o developing and evidencing the three additional skills of To achieve the ASDAN Certificate of Personal Effectiveness the student must gain credits by completing challenges, and providing evidence to demonstrate skills development at the appropriate level. Students will need to:Students and staff are expected to use the proforma provided by ASDAN which support the consistent production of evidence. Candidates who do not achieve the full qualification requirements of 6 units, can receive certification for units successfully achieved. NB Credit is given as recognition for the time taken in the processes of action planning, reviewing progress, recording achievements, organising the portfolio and completing the checklists. These provide an introduction to the national standards for the Wider Key Skills, and must include the use of ASDAN's Plan/Do and Review recording documents, at the appropriate levelPlanning and Carrying out Research, Communicating through Discussion, and Planning and Giving an Oral Presentation, at the appropriate level, based on the Key Skill of Communication.Once all the work has been carried out the candidate must complete and sign the Assessment Checklist to indicate the file reference of each piece of evidence. This must be checked and signed by the assessor, and in turn by the internal moderator who will be confirming common standards throughout the centre. The work is then ready for external moderation.
